At Nabsys, our technology is powered by innovation, but our innovation is powered by people. Our Nabster Heroes highlight teammates whose drive, curiosity, and commitment help move our mission forward.

This month, we’re recognizing Kaylee Mathews, Scientific & Technical Writer at Nabsys and a long-time volunteer leader with Empire Girls State, a week-long leadership and citizenship program that brings together high school juniors from across New York State to learn how government works by building and running their own mock state.

Discovering the Power of Voice

Kaylee’s connection to Empire Girls State began in 2011, when she attended the program as a student. Through elections, legislative sessions, and collaboration with peers from across the state, she experienced firsthand what it means to participate fully in a system and to be taken seriously within it.

When asked what that first summer meant to her, Kaylee shared:

That early realization continues to shape how Kaylee approaches her work at Nabsys. As a Scientific & Technical Writer, she focuses on helping complex ideas be understood clearly—ensuring that important scientific details are communicated in a way that invites engagement rather than creates barriers.

Choosing to Give Back

Just two years later, Kaylee returned to Empire Girls State as a volunteer, beginning a commitment that has now spanned more than a decade. Since 2013, she has served as a counselor, Coordinator of Academic Affairs, and most recently, as one of two Coordinators of Media and Technology.

Reflecting on what motivated her to keep coming back, Kaylee said:

In her current role at Nabsys, that same motivation shows up in how she supports teams across the company—working closely with scientists, engineers, and commercial partners to ensure their work is accurately represented and accessible to the audiences who need it. For Kaylee, communication is a form of service: creating space for ideas, data, and people to be understood.

Watching Confidence Take Shape

Empire Girls State lasts just one week, but the transformation that happens during that time is striking. Each summer, Kaylee watches students arrive nervous and uncertain, some away from home for the first time, and leave with a stronger sense of confidence and capability.

When asked what she finds most meaningful about the program, Kaylee shared:

That moment of realization is something Kaylee values in her work at Nabsys as well—whether it’s helping a colleague refine how they explain their work, shaping a piece of scientific content, or supporting internal teams through complex communication challenges.

A Hero Guided by Purpose

At Nabsys, Kaylee brings the same principles that guide her volunteer work—clarity, inclusion, and respect for people’s voices—to everything she does. By bridging technical depth with thoughtful communication, she helps ensure that innovation doesn’t just exist, but is understood and shared. That commitment to helping people find confidence in their contributions is what makes Kaylee a Nabster Hero.
